![]() i've been a fan a yellowman and 1980's dancehall music for a long time. probably since 1986 when JCC played this music in his car. it was a new sound to me, i can't remember who was singing, but i liked it as soon as i heard it. the trouble with dancehall music is that it dwells primarily on vinyls and tapes and i've always struggled to expand my music collection. occasionally i heard some live recordings, like with Lord Zeljko on parisian radio. i've wanted to go to actual dancehalls in jamaica after i saw a great documentary around 1994 in a "l'oeil du cyclone" program about music trends, that also covered techno and jungle music. then in 1991, aurelien made this tape for toma and i with a supposedly homemade compilation of amazing ragga. we listened to it all summer. later, i found out it was the excellent "Planete Raggamuffin" french compilation. it wasn't really homemade compilation, but it still remain a great album. another major album, was "The Story Of Jamaican Music: Dance Hall Good To We 1982-1993" that my cousin had. it contains some of the best raggamuffin tracks i've heard, but according they'd probably be classified as mainstream. the starting point of this post was a youtube video of yellowman (pictured above) that i recently came across showing him with a completely disfigured face. i couldn't believe it was him and didn't know he'd been fighting cancer for years. in addition to this, he must have fought quite a bit in his life. raised in an orphanage and being an albinos probably gave him a difficult start in life (from wikipedia). it made me see him in a different light after finding this out about him. i find him superclass on this Reggae Sunsplash 1982 performance. i wish i could understand what he says that makes the audience laugh. |
